Many families have a formal dining room that they only use a couple times a year. Typically holidays and the occasional formal party are the only occasions where this room is utilized. The rest of the time it is a forgotten room that just sits. If you are lucky enough to have a home large enough to have a formal dining room, you really should use them more often. Making the room family friendly could be a good start.
If you have a small family, consider checking out the round dining room sets. If you buy one that has removable leaves, you can expand your table for holidays and such, but instead of keeping a huge table in there, a smaller one will more likely give you more reason to use this space.
Changing the rooms decor can really make it more welcoming. People who don’t feel nervous to be in the room will more than likely enjoy using it and will want to use it more often. Try holding an informal party in here, like a child’s baking party. Set up a kitchen hand mixer, cookie sheets, rolling pins and lots of frosting and decorations. Help the kids create their own party favors, delicious baked treats to enjoy later at home.
When you change your dining room to a less formal space, you can actually bring your family closer. Utilizing the good china and silver can be fun for children. It will also teach them proper behavior for dining out. Show your children how fun it is to sit together as a family and enjoy a fancy dinner in a room that is not often used.
Eating dinner together brings a family closer, and many families today don’t bother because of busy schedules. But eating together just once or twice a week is better than nothing. It is a great place to start.
If you already have expensive dining room table sets in your dining room, and you are weary about using the room as a daily place to eat, why not invest in some fun chair covers as well as a table cloth. The chair covers will protect your expensive chairs from accidental spills and the table cloth will protect your table. All can be tossed into the laundry to be cleaned and used again. This is a great idea for those with children or even clumsy spouses.
If you just can’t manage to make your formal dining room into an every day eating room, try it once a week, or once a month even. Have a date night where you and your spouse dress up for a fancy dinner in your formal dining room. Light candles, play soft music, make a romantic evening of it. This is a great way to bring the two of you closer and utilize a rarely used space.
