For those who live in America, the patriotic season begins in late May with Memorial Day and goes on to November, when we honor those who served in U.S. wars on Veterans Day. There are also other holidays in between, including Flag Day, the 4th of July and Labor Day. Those are the major patriotic holidays but there are also plenty of others. The first holiday actually comes before Memorial Day and is called Armed Forces Day. Then in September we have Patriot Day and Citizenship Day, followed by United Nations Day right before Halloween in October.
Most Americans take the major patriotic holidays seriously, in addition to some of the minor ones. This is probably partially due to the fact that so many people have war veterans in their immediate families, or at least know people who has served in the U.S. armed forces. For people with connections to armed forces personnel, these particular holidays are personal. That is probably the reason why many people use vintage Veterans Day cards or veterans clipart to send cards that honor veterans for Veterans Day. A simple card can make a world of difference to a veteran who might think his or her service to our country has been forgotten.
This is particularly important to soldiers returning from Iraq. They have seen and experienced things few have and should be given our thanks for enduring that on our behalf. People don’t make a fuss over Veterans Day like they do with the 4th of July, so you wouldn’t blame veterans for thinking their countrymen don’t care. In many cases, no one was waving American flags as they returned home. And there are few parties thrown for Veterans Day either. That could be because the holiday brings up sadness and bad memories for some.
It would probably be better to just thank a veteran every time we meet one. That way they’ll know they’re appreciated all year-round, not just on Veterans Day. Just that small act can make a big difference to someone who feels forgotten.
