Some say yes while others vehemently say no, that we are not ruled by scents alone so their place in history cannot be altered by it. In history, it was not uncommon for people to go extensive periods without bathing or cleansing of any type. Because pheromone signals are boosted by the amount of sweat on an individuals body, it is believed that the more “dirty” an individual was, the more magnetic that their pheromone signal was. Scent signals can create bonds between a man and a woman, or a man and his wife, meaning that when the scent signals are present at a constant level, the bond will last.

However, once individuals began to bathe on a regular basis, the bond between a man and a woman began to decay. For instance, when the Romans Empire started, men and women held their wedding vows above all. But, once the Roman Empire became its greatest, and cleansing was advocated at meetings each day at the conveniently located municipal baths, the number of divorces jumped to a high rate. Many researchers feel that the number of divorces was in direct correlation to the fact that the Romans were bathing on a regular basis and thereby were removing their personal pheromone signals.

Because there has been research into this area, it is now common practice to use products that will imitate natural pheromones. The key to using oils or products to enhance or manufacture a pheromone signal is to use more than a dab, but not a lot as to be considered over-bearing. Another thing to remember is to not use a multitude of fragrances. When a multitude of fragrances are used the pheromone signal that is given off can become very disorientating. Most products are used in order to entice a person of the opposite sex and they can be huge confidence boosters when searching for a potential mate.

Academics and scientists have hit yet another debate in regards to our scents. Some believe that the rise and fall of great nations such as the Roman Empire is a result of scents or the lack of. Others are not so quick to accept this stand because there are other factors that can be tied to the fall of said nations. However, it is known that scent signals are what bonds one person to another and if that chemical is nonexistent or diminishes over time, the physiological reactions of others will also decrease. The use of merchandise, whether it is oils or perfumes have become commonly used in order to imitate the body’s natural scents.
