Readiness Assessment - How Do You Know When Someone Can Benefit From Psychotherapy?

January 25th, 2012 · No Comments · lonely and desperate articles

The affected person’s partner asks, “How do I do know she will profit from psychotherapy?” And I’m honored to have the answer roll proper out of me.

It is a question that many members of the family have once they reach that point of doubt. You understand what I mean. Doubt that the affected person shall be something aside from what they are.

It is also a question I get from the family members which are entangled co-dependently with the recognized patient. It’s the question of somebody with resistance of their own.

Answering this question for yourself and for those intimately involved with the affected person can help in establishing an alliance and collaborative commitment to psychotherapeutic change.

The following readiness assessment is how I know when an identified patient is an effective candidate for psychotherapy…

1) Their resistance is porous.

Resistance is a pure part of the therapeutic process. It’s the psyche holding its own in the face of perceived menace to change the best way things are.

It’s our natural boundary that works as a barrier against the specter of being something aside from what is. It is that within all of us that aids in maintaining the status quo.

Sufferers that are good candidates for psychotherapy have a porous resistance. It has a supple quality to it that strikes, bends and opens with their internal inquiry.

2) They have quick access to their interior world.

By internal world I mean the personal datum that contributes who and what you’re psychologically, mentally, emotionally, bodily, socially and spiritually. Some folks when directed to the place inside themselves the place they feel issues can taste it, whereas others cannot.

three) Their readiness issue is above 90.

Readiness is vital to any sort of therapeutic change. One must want issues to be different than they are. And they should need it in a approach that they’re prepared to entertain giving up what is…to have it…to become it…to open unto it.

I’m reminded of a passage by Anaire Nin that says this so well: “And the day came…when the desire to stay the same was more painful than the risk…to grow.”

In case you are a therapist or a member of the family of a person who needs psychological assist, and you’re scratching your head questioning if there’s any level to proceeding with a therapeutic intervention, then you’ll benefit by being aware of the readiness assessment and candidacy requirements listed above. It can save you time and it’ll save the patient both time and money.
